“This year, our nation marks the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln’s promise of freedom to America’s slaves. While slavery is illegal in nearly every country on earth, there are still 27 million people living in slavery today. In September of 2012, President Obama delivered a momentous speech on modern-day slavery–the longest speech on slavery since President Lincoln—calling human trafficking “one of the greatest human rights causes of our time.” Exactly fifty years before President Obama’s speech, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated, ‘There is but one way to commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation.
